Kung Fu Instructor Training Program
There is a right way and a dangerous way . .
On this page . . .
You will find information about the Shaolin Academy's Instructor Training Program or Kung Fu Instructors in Training (KIiT)
Overview & Introduction
Although there are still some Martial Art instructors out there who's sole qualification for teaching is the incredible ability of kicking or punching someone in the head, this is almost a bygone era. Most professional martial art schools send their instructors for the basic requirements of First Aid and a Working with Children certification. But as mentioned, these are the basic legal requirements and do not in anyway make a person a teacher or leader. It is still up to each club to have their own Instructor Development process. The following outlines the Shaolin Kung Fu Academy's Instructor Program.
Level 1 - Management & Administration
The first level you learn two very important teachings;
- Nothing works without some basic Administration
- You have to Manage your place of training
As an introduction to being a professional instructor you are taught to be a Manager; prepare the venue for safe training and then securing the venue after training so that it is usable and ready for the next time. And in between these two, record student attendances. It seems like such simple tasks and as such they are, except that they need to be second nature so that they do not get in the way of you being a good and safe Kung Fu Instructor.
Also, from the time you enter the training program, you participate on the Monthly Instructor Training Sessions covering such topics as Safety, Duty of Care, Dealing with Difficult Behaviors, Teaching/Learning Styles, Life Balance, Resource/Money/Time Management, Leadership, Class Planning, Problem solving and many more.
Assessment and Advancement = At one point or another your Instructor will have looked at your progress and will offer to start your 'exam'. This consists of Managing and Administrating the venue 10 times preferably without a flaw. If you can do this, you have passed Level One!

Level 2 - Student Management
The Bread and Butter of any teacher are his students. There are three parts to this;
- The New Student Introduction & Safety Process.
- The Buddy Program
- The Membership Process
1 - A good instructor needs to know each student, their needs and abilities. One of the best ways to learn about new students is to be the one that meets them when they come in to have a trial class. Each New Student needs to be made aware of Safety and Security; read the Indemnity Form and receive the New Student Information Pack. Some of these parts are Legal Requirements and some are Insurance Requirements and need to be followed correctly. This ensures that the student is Informed and is aware of Safety and Legalities.
2 - The first class in a new strange place is always a bit stressful. To help cope with this, every new student is allocated a 'Buddy'; a person who is there for them, introduces them to everyone and stays with them through the class to help in any way possible. This is an important task, as this is the first real impression that the new student has of the Academy.
3 - When a New Student has decided to join, many require some questions answered and help filling in the forms and making the right choices. As this is an agreement with the Academy, this too, is a very important process that needs to be managed exceeding correctly and well.
As a Level 2 you will first start by being a buddy to New Students and listen in when the Senior Instructor covers the Introduction and Safety Information. When you are comfortable with the Role of a Buddy, you will help with the New Student Process until the Senior Instructor deems that you are ready for your first solo introduction under supervision. Once you are able to do this 10 times unsupervised and correctly you then move to learning about the Joining Process. Much the same as the New Student process, your first assist, than manage and when you facilitate the joining of 10 Students successfully, you have completed this level!
Assessment and Advancement = When you have been a successful buddy 10 times, helped 10 New Student through the Introductory Process and managed the Joining Process 10 times, you have completed this level!

- You will be helping with substantial parts of instructing under the supervision of your Senior Instructor
- Be intimately familiar with the Martial Art Instructor Code of Conduct
- Be Familiar with the Martial Art Code of Practice (Part of the NCAS Program).
- You need to obtain three external certifications;
- Working with Children (Federal Police)
