Shaolin Academy Grading's are held twice a year. The first is in June/July and the second and complete Gradings are in November/December. Following below is a guide how these Gradings are scheduled, which and when and there are resources for preparation.

    June/July Grading Plan

    1st Weekend, Day 1 Saturday

The foundation for all Shaolin Training is the first 5 levels of the 5 Animal Curriculum that covers all the essential techniques that you need for most all Shaolin training. That is why this is covered as the 1st Grading Day; which usually is a Saturday. At the end of the year the Shaolin 5 Animal Gradings will again be the first Gradings for the Exam Period except they will be followed on Sunday by the Senior, Animal Levels of Shaolin Kung Fu.

The concept of Re-gradings was introduced to the Shaolin Academy some time around 1998. Along the principles of continuous improvement, whenever you grade for a level after Gray Sash level 1, you need to Re-grade the previous level. So for Grading White Sash to Yellow Sash, you need to Re-grade the Gray Sash to White Sash. When Grading for Yellow Sash, you Re-grade White Sash; and so on. When Grading from Green to Red Sash, you will Re-grade all the levels from the beginning!

    1st Weekend, Day 2 Sunday

As you can see above, we cover the two primary levels of each the Shaolin 72 Fist Boxing and Shaolin 170 Move grappling. should 3 or more Students want to attempt level 3 than everything is moved accordingly back by one or two hours.

    2nd Weekend, Day 1 Saturday

In the mid-year gradings we normally focus on the Tiger Tooth Broad Sword for the Primary Weapon and the Shaolin Red Eagle Spear for the Advanced Weapon. Each weapon is divided into two halves, Technical and Application. Students attempting the 2nd part application, need to regrade the first part the technical!

    3rd Weekend, Day 1 Saturday

In the evening of the Saturday, one week after the Grading, we organize a Grading Presentation and Feedback night. Currently we meet at Lazy Mo's in Oakleigh, around 7pm for a Social, Dinner and then Grading Feedback and Certificate Presentation.

    November/December Grading Plan

    1st Weekend, Saturday and Sunday

The Gradings are launched again with the Shaolin 5 Animal Kung Fu levels 1 through 5 on the Saturday, then followed by Day 2, covering the 4 Advanced Shaolin Kung Fu Animal levels.

    2nd Weekend,Saturday & Sunday

Much the Same as the 5 Animal Kung Fu Gradings, the Foundation levels on Saturday and the Advanced levels on Sunday.

    3rd Weekend,Saturday & Sunday

As you can see, the structures of the full program of gradings in 5 Animal Kung Fu, 72 Fist Boxing and 170 Move Grappling is almost identical in structure and nature. Only the content differs.

    4th Weekend,Saturday only

The Weaponry grading is again much the same as in Mid Year and only requires the one day.

    5th Weekend,Saturday PM

This is again the Grading Celebration and End of Year break-up party. Because of all the hectic around this time of the year, this Saturday is at least a 2 weeks clear of the end-of-the-year. In 2008 the last training day will be Friday before the Saturday Celebration which is 13 December 2008. In 2009 (as another example) is will be Saturday 12 December 2008.

    Working out the Grading Schedule

All grading applications for levels Red Sash and above need to be placed by end of October. If no applications for these levels are received, the gradings Contract and the senior levels are not run. This would reduce the Gradings from 7 Days over 4 weekends to 4 Days over 2 Weekends. This is why the applications for the Advanced level need to be in before start of November as they will determine which Advanced Levels need to be run.
