What a kick can achieve is important but how it achieves this outcome and at what cost to you is even more important. Cost as in outcome, difficulty of delivery, training time to master the kick and probable success. Of course, the most used kicks are the easiest to use and quickest to train. But then, most martial artists are also trained how to avoid, evade or defend against these kicks. An unusual kick will surprise the attacker but usually also expose the defender in ways that can be used against them.
You need to know the basic front, side, and roundhouse kicks as almost every hand and foot martial art knows them. You may also add another kick or two as your speciality and secret, get out of a tough spot, kicks. Whatever you choose, ensure that you know the kick well and do not over use your kicks. Your legs are primarily for mobility, second for defence and lastly for kicking. Yes, there are styles out there that specialize on kicks and often you see them with hands dangling by their side. Ask any pro martial artist or master what they think of those styles, for anything other, than controlled style dependant fighting.
There are many ways to understand kicks and the usual is the basic three, front, side, roundhouse, then the others. Another way of looking at kicks is by body position in relation to the kick. Front Facing, side facing, back facing, and down. Yet another simpler way is straight and round delivery. Shaolin 5 Animal Kung Fu classifies kicks by the four physical animals. Tiger for Power: Panther for Unusual: Crane for Defensive: Snake for Precision. You will notice many of the kicks below with such a label. But on this page, we present the kick by the area of the foot that impacts the attacker. We believe that this is the way to understand the kick, it's scope, correct delivery, and function. Enjoy.
